Cape Town Castle

The original Portuguese fort was destroyed so the Dutch could build this five-pointed castle, which the English later used. It was also the governor’s house and the prison.

Built just above the beach (in fact the gatehouse had to be moved after it was found to be too vulnerable to spring tides), the castle is now nearly a kilometer inland, with most of its cannons pointing at a railyard.
