Order Diptera
Animalia > Insecta > Diptera
True flies and close relatives. The name diptera means "two wings"; dipterans fly using their forewings and have little stubs called halteres as vestigial hindwings. Dipterans include house flies, midges, gnats, and mosquitoes. None of them have a venomous sting, but some of them will bite.

Order Hemiptera
Animalia > Insecta > Hemiptera
True bugs, including stink bugs, aphids, and cicadas. The name hemiptera means "half a wing"; the order was traditionally defined to consist of insects with forewings that were hardened on the front half of the wing. (These are now a suborder, Heteroptera.) All hemipterans have sucking mouthparts for drinking plant sap, and do not have a wormlike larval stage - they hatch into nymphs with jointed legs.
